Do your kids feel that you understand them?

Do your kids feel that you REALLY understand them? How about your spouse?

One evening, my older daughter shared what was feeling hard for her at school and that she didn't like something that my husband and I were doing. I listened and answered. But she did not feel understood or that I believed her. Her therapist told me this and it was a huge wake up call.

It can be hard to show empathy to our family members and colleagues for many reasons. Our fast-paced life that is full of distractions, our biases, our emotional fatigue from being a working parent, and the fact that when people's situations are different than ours, we have reduced understanding.

Empathy is the soil from which connection grows.

#1 - Pause what you are doing

#2 - Actively listen to what the person is saying or not saying

#3 - Ask yourself, "How might they be feeling right now?"

#4 - Validate their experience and emotions

Practice these four over the next 30-days and see what shifts. I promise, you will feel more connected.

Remember to prioritize your happiness,
Tia
