You Feel Like You Should Be With Your Kids More

You are constantly thinking while you are working, am I missing too much?

You have this internal conflict between work and your goals and your purpose and then you have these little human beings that you are responsible for and that you love dearly. This triggers guilt, and then you are stressed about it, and it makes you feel anxious.

You are bombarded with societal and cultural media messaging that says and implies that a “good mom” is always present with their children.

You are a high-achieving working mom, so you can’t always be with them and you love your career. So there is this persistent self-criticism and you may be overextending yourself at home and with work.

It is Feb 2017 and I am in the North of France for a work conference. A dream work trip and yet, the entire time, I am anxious and worried and full of guilt that I am not home with my toddler and baby. I could not be present and fully enjoy this incredible opportunity. Can you relate?

One research-based habit to support you when you are thinking, “I should be with my kids more”, is the science of self-compassion by Dr. Neff.

1. Talk to yourself exactly how you talk to your best friend
2. Practice meditation and mindfulness to notice your thoughts and feelings
3. Remember that all high-achieving working moms struggle and feel the same way

You are always empowered to create a new vision for your life and make different choices. You are never stuck.
