3 Steps to Feel Less Overwhelmed

Overwhelm is not your only option.

If you are feeling overwhelmed right now, you are not alone and you are not doing anything wrong.

It is September 2021 and my daughters are 6 and 8-years old. Our older daughter was diagnosed the previous year with a rare disability and due to it, is unable to attend school. I am completely overwhelmed and stressed with growing my speaking business, launching my book, Be a Happy Leader, running my podcast, parenting, researching about the disability, marriage, and running the house. On a regular call with my brand strategist, I completely break down in tears saying, “Jeremy, I can’t do this anymore.”

Overwhelm affects us physically, emotionally, and mentally. It has a negative impact on our relationships and how we show up and perform at work. You may feel increased irritability, anger, anxiety, depression, and feelings of hopelessness or guilt. It effects our productivity, creativity and engagement.

3 Steps to Move From Overwhelmed to Balanced

1) Share It
- Talk with one or more people about how you are feeling and what is causing you to feel overwhelmed. Be real, vulnerable, and open about your thoughts, emotions, and what negative effects you are experiencing. Be open to feedback and ideas about how to make changes.

2) Understand Your Fears - You are doing so much for several reasons and some of them may be connected to what you are afraid of. What will happen if you work less or say no? What are your fears around your children, marriage, etc? What is your perception of rest?

3) Visualize a Calmer You - Talk and write about how you would spend your weekdays and weekends if you were more balanced and grounded. Who could you be if you did less and created more “white space” in your life? Know that you can always change and you have more agency that you think.

Let me know - what advice would you give to an overwhelmed working mom?

You are enough.
Your kids love you so much.
Everything is going to be ok.
